Murtagh

This blog contains SPOILERS for all the inheritance cycle books

Murtagh. The most confused character from the inheritance cycle.

Murtagh is the son of Morzan and Selena, and is half brother to Eragon.

Eragon:
Murtagh saves Eragon and Saphira from the Ra'zac and travels with them to Farthen Dûr, where Eragon was planning to pursue the Varden. After surviving many escapades together, Eragon and Murtagh form a close bond whilst their travelling.

When they finally arrive at Farthern Dûr, Murtagh his treated with hostility when his identity is discovered. In the end, he was set free from the prision the Varden had placed him in and was allowed to help the Varden in the Battle of Farthen Dûr.

Eldest:
Murtagh was shown to be killed in the battle, whilst fighting Urgals. Eragon had mourned for his friend, and had finally accepted the truth. He was actually captured by Galbatorix's forces, whom placed one of his dragon eggs in front of Murtagh. Murtagh named his Dragon Thorn.

Thorn and Murtagh were forced to swear loyalty to Galbatorix. "After Thorn hatched for me, Galbatorix forced both of us to swear loyalty to him in the ancient language. We cannot disobey him now."-pg 647, Eldest

He defeated Eragon at the Battle of Burning Plains, but did not kill him, showing his mercy only because they were once friends. After claiming that they are brothers and that Morzan is also Eragon's father, he took Eragon's sword, Zar'oc, and flew away with Eragon feeling defeated .

Brisingr:
Murtagh is first seen when he fights Eragon in Surda, but with the help of elves, he was defeated and was forced to flee. But, still Eragon admitted that even with the help of elves, Murtagh possessed unbelievable strength. It was later revealed that Murtagh uses Eldunari lent to him by Galbatorix to increase his strength. There were several clues about the Eldunari, in Brisingr, such as: When Muratgh and Thorn interrupt wedding preparations, in the chapter Fire in the sky, Murtagh asks Eragon if he would go to Uru 'baen in peace which Eragon replied with:
"I would sooner tear out my own heart!"
"Better to tear out my hearts!" was Murtaghs answer.

There was also the man who could see light emitting from people who could use magic. Apparently, Eragon's light was strong, but Murtagh's light was shining through him. The light was from the Eldunari.

Later, Eragon discovers that Murtagh was wrong. He is not son of Morzan, but of Brom. Though Eragon and Murtagh share the same mother (Selena), Eragon evidently does not consider him as a brother, or even half brother.

Murtagh and Thorn fight in the battle of Gil'ead. Murtagh is evidently disappointed with Oromis and Glader, shouting: "Curse you for not showing yourself sooner! Curse you! You could have helped us!.." - pg 731, Brisingr. Murtagh was possed by Galbotorix, and used Murtagh, Galbotorix finished off Oromis and Glader with his ultimate power.

Book IV
I don't know about you, but I a have a feeling that CP is going to write Murtagh's point of view in the final book of the inheritance cycle. Murtagh is a mysterious charecter. We don't know how much he's suffered, but I'm guessing it's a lot, since he's lashing out to the world.

So the ultimate and final question:
Is Murtagh good or evil?

Time will tell, and so will book IV!

Iced. :D
